Occupational Safety Measures in Cold Storage Rooms

Occupational Safety Measures in Cold Storage Rooms

The company has determined and fully complies with the rules and precautions to be taken in order to minimize the risks arising due to weather conditions during the field studies conducted in winter conditions. These rules cover all the activities carried out by all personnel within the scope of projects carried out by the company during open field works.

The best protection against cold related health risks is to be conscious and prepared. Workers should notice the signs and symptoms of overexposure both in themselves and in others. Pain in the extremities may be the first warning sign. Any worker who is seriously shaking should move away from the cold environment.

Some definitions used

Cold: Heat deprivation. When the temperature is low, prominently or below normal.

Frost: Cold weather and clear skies are required to occur. It is first formed in relatively low areas, protected from pits and wind. First, the soil temperature drops below the freezing point (soil freezing). If cooling continues, the cold gradually spreads into the air layer above the ground (air freezing).

Cold bite: It is the occurrence of freezing on the skin and under the body tissue as a result of being under the influence of freezing cold for a long time.

Limbs: Arms and legs.

Hypothermia: Abnormally low body temperature. Normal with 37 ° C

Discomfort if it falls below 35 ° C.

Felt temperature (Windchill): It is a measure of the cooling effect of the wind on the skin.

Responsibilities

Working in extreme cold weather

Working in extremely cold weather can force the heating system of the personnel. In cold weather, when studies are not managed properly, physical load, fluid loss, fatigue or other body factors can cause cold-related diseases or death.

The body will stop the functioning of non-critical organs to keep the central and main organs warm by ensuring adequate blood flow.

The felt temperature (windchill) is an important parameter when working in cold weather. Wind is a factor that increases heat loss, so it is a more correct approach to take into account the sensed temperature, not the measured temperature while planning the studies.

For example, when the pilgrim temperature of -30 0C is combined with a wind speed of 15 km / h, it feels the deep temperature as -41 0C and freezes in about 2-10 minutes.

Cold diseases

When you are exposed to cold, the vessels in your skin, arms and legs contract and decrease blood flow. This helps keep your critical organs warm, but your arms, legs and fingers run the risk of freezing.

Cold Bite

Depending on cooling, it is the loss of heat and freezing of one part of the body (usually the toes and fingers). Due to the freezing of a part of the body and the narrowing of the vessels that supply that area, the part is fed well with blood, resulting in death in the tissues and cells in that area.

Cold bite stages:

1. Degree (Superfacial-Superficial): Feeling of extreme cold in the region, numbness, tingling, discoloration (usually dull).

2. Degree (Partial Thickness): Feeling of extreme cold in the region, numbness, tingling, discoloration (with a light colored liquid, the area looks like stuffed or bruising that looks filled with blood)

3. Degree (Full Thickness): The region's overcooling, loss of sensation, color change (whitening in general), hardening of the region (petrifying state).

Very important warning: In such cases, if you do not have valid first aid training approved by the medical authorities, your intervention may have wrong or undesirable results. At this point, do not massage the cold affected area, rub with snow or ice, and do not directly contact the external heat source. Try to move the area away from the cause that has cooled down. Deliver to your healthcare provider in the safest and fastest way for you and the survivor.

hypothermia

This means that the body temperature drops below the normal level. Shivering is an automatic defense system for the body to warm itself in cold weather. Constant tremor is an important symptom of hypothermia.

Since the symptoms of hypothermia usually progress very slowly and the person's ability to reason decreases, the person with hypothermia is generally not aware of the condition. Symptoms of hypothermia can include the following.

Moderate symptoms

* Shake

* Purple lips and fingers

* Slow breathing and heartbeat

* Disorientation and confusion

* Inconsistency

* Symptoms similar to drunkenness

Severe symptoms

unable to decide

slowing of the heartbeat at a level where the pulse cannot be found

to shake

undetectable breathing

that the casualty looks dead

Treatment

Hypothermia can cause death if emergency medical attention is not received.

Carefully move the victim to the shelter. (Sudden and rapid transport can disrupt the heart rhythm.)

Keep the victim awake

Take off the wet clothes and wrap the victim with the veil.

Heat the basic areas of the body directly, such as the neck, groin, chest, abdomen. Do not interfere with arms and feet.

Give hot and sweet drinks.

Planning

All staff need to plan their work with their manager before starting work. Outdoor work should be planned in cold weather, and weather conditions should be regularly checked and monitored during the term of office.

Operators should inform their first supervisor every day whether it is suitable for the job. Your decision-making ability should not be impaired by fatigue, alcohol and medicines (prescription or illegal). Tell your supervisor if you are under any medication that will prevent you from working in cold weather.

Rest periods should be evaluated within the scope of the business plan and should be planned in the light of the table below. The rest periods below are valid for every 4 hour working period. Rest periods are determined as 10 minutes in a warm environment. This table is not applicable for those whose clothes are wet.
