Have you ever considered building your own cold room where you can store your fruits and vegetables year-round, during the fall and winter? If you have the space, it's a fairly simple project, ideally in a basement with bare concrete walls.

The ideal location for a cold room is the corner of an unfinished basement. Why a corner? Because it gives you two naturally cold exterior walls... and if one of those walls is the north wall, even better.

A cold room can be almost any size. Make sure it's at least 6 feet deep for easy circulation. It'll typically be between 8 and 10 feet long. Build special walls to isolate the room from the rest of the basement... and of course, you'll need to include a door in your plan. Because a cold room will be quite damp, use moisture-resistant building materials whenever possible, not only to prevent rot but also to control musty odors.
